Root Canals Q & A

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure used to remove infected tooth pulp and restore the tooth’s structural integrity. When performed by a skilled practitioner like each of the dentists at Envision a Smile, a root canal can save your tooth.

Root canals used to be a source of dread, but today’s tools and techniques have made this dental procedure straightforward and comfortable. Modern root canals are also more durable than those performed in previous generations.

When is a root canal necessary?

The inner portion of each tooth is a hollow chamber filled with a soft material called pulp. Your pulp contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues. Numerous things can create an infection in your pulp, and the only way to cure that infection is by removing all traces of pulp.

Fortunately, your pulp is only necessary when you’re young, and your teeth are still developing. Later in life, your teeth can survive without the pulp.

You may develop an infection in the pulp of your tooth from:

  • Large fillings
  • Repeated procedures on one tooth
  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Traumatic injury to the tooth
  • Deep decay

A root canal can save a tooth from extraction. In many cases, there is no clear indication of what caused the infection, but a root canal procedure at Envision a Smile can eradicate the infection and restore your oral health.

What should I expect during a root canal?

When you arrive for your appointment at Envision a Smile, you receive a numbing injection to help you rest comfortably during your procedure. Sedation is also available if you have dental anxiety or simply want a more relaxing root canal experience.

First, your dentist isolates the tooth before drilling a small access hole. They then use a series of specialized dental tools to remove all traces of pulp from the inner chamber of your tooth. Once the interior is cleaned and shaped, your dentist fills the chamber with a rubbery dental material to strengthen the chamber and places a temporary filling in the access hole.

The next step involves gathering impressions or digital imaging to guide the creation of your custom crown. Once crafting of the crown is complete, your Envision a Smile dentist checks it for fit before cementing it into position, which completes the restoration.

You may notice some heightened sensitivity or mild discomfort in the days following your root canal. Over-the-counter pain medication is all that’s needed to address these issues, and you’ll be able to resume normal activities the next day.
